We are celebrating the life of St Francis with an event dedicated to the history of the Franciscan orders that have shaped the religious and cultural life of the city over the centuries.

The event will combine a journey through documents, manuscripts and ancient books with a walk through the historic centre, from the former Capuchin monastery to the Civic Museum, offering the opportunity to explore in greater depth the role played by the Conventual Franciscans and the Capuchins in the history of the Argentana community. Through archival sources and valuable bibliographical evidence, monuments both extant and lost, works of art and ancient artefacts, we shall retrace the history of the convents, learn about significant figures and places, and rediscover the link between Argenta and the message of St Francis. An in-depth exploration of pilgrimage insignia in medieval Italy, enriched by a special guided tour of the archaeological section of the ancient moat on Via Vinarola. It is precisely here that excavations have unearthed a rare and precious pilgrim’s medallion. During the event, new and surprising theories regarding the origin of this artefact will be revealed: a recent re-examination of its iconography suggests, in fact, that it depicts St Francis. An extraordinary discovery that would confirm its origin along the Way of St Francis or the Via Francigena, shedding new light on the routes of faith in our region. On this occasion, previously unpublished research hypotheses on a rare pilgrim’s medallion found at the site will be presented: a reinterpretation of its iconography appears to depict St Francis, thus linking the artefact – and the Argenta area – to the routes of the Way of St Francis or the Via Francigena.

The event is aimed at all enthusiasts of local history, culture and traditions, as well as anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of a significant chapter in Argenta’s past through an original and engaging perspective.
